Larry Keating recognized as a Privacy by Design Ambassador
by the Information & Privacy Commissioner of Ontario

Toronto, Ontario – September 8, 2010 – Larry Keating, president and CEO of No Panic Computing® has been recognized as a Privacy by Design (PbD) Ambassador by the Information & Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Dr. Ann Cavoukian. PbD Ambassadors advocate that privacy be built directly into systems from the outset, making privacy protection an organization's default mode of operation.
“Larry Keating is a thought-leader who practices the principles of Privacy by Design and demonstrates that positive-sum, doubly-enabling, user-centric results can indeed be achieved when privacy is built into systems, proactively,” said Dr. Cavoukian. “Larry has long demonstrated the techniques and benefits of making privacy the default – I am pleased to appoint him as a PbD Ambassador.”
Privacy by Design is a concept that was developed by Dr. Cavoukian to address the ever-growing and systemic effects of Information and Communication Technologies, and of large-scale networked data systems. Privacy by Design asserts that the future of privacy cannot be assured solely by compliance with legislation and regulatory frameworks; rather, the protection of individuals’ personal information must become an organization’s default mode of operation.
“I have been a fan from day one of Dr. Cavoukian’s strategy to take the increasingly critical issue of the protection of personal information a leap beyond reactive measures, to proactive user-friendly product and system design that will make privacy a default deliverable,” said Larry Keating. “Putting to work the principles of Privacy by Design leads to more beneficial, socially responsible and valuable products that result in increased user satisfaction and uptake. These are the kind of results successful enterprises seek, and protections every user should demand.”
Larry has been an advocate of the Privacy by Design concept as a business leader, author and speaker. As a business leader, he invented the world’s first Notebook-as-a-Service™ and founded No Panic Computing – a laptop which implements privacy protection as a default condition through sophisticated encryption management and secure backup that is virtually transparent to the user. As a speaker, he describes the importance of embedded privacy in his various speeches and his course “Safe Computing for the Independent Professional”. The course qualifies against the continuing education requirements of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals (CAAMP), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO), the CLU Institute (CLU, RHU designations) of the Financial Advisors Association of Canada (Advocis), the Certified General Accountants of Ontario (CGA) and the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario (CMA). Larry has written articles advocating Privacy by Design published in Canadian Lawyer, eChannelLine, Connect IT and various other publications.
In addition to founding Keating Technologies and No Panic Computing, Larry has served as founding chairman of the Ministers’ Technology Advisory Group for the Province of Ontario; member of the Chair’s Advisory Council on e-Government for the Province of Ontario and currently serves as a technical advisor to the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for the Aboriginal Computer Literacy Program, among other boards and advisories.
