Security: Mac vs. PC

April 15th, 2010
Macs are widely believed to be the more secure choice of personal computer. Surprisingly, the reality does not live up to the expectations.

According to cnet.com interview Marc Maiffret stated that, “Anytime there's been a hacking contest, within a few hours someone's found a new Apple vulnerability.”

The celebrity hacker goes on to say, “If they were taking it seriously, they wouldn't claim to be more secure than Microsoft because they are very much not. And the Apple community is pretty ignorant to the risks that are out there as it relates to Apple.”

“The reason we don't see more attacks out there compared to Microsoft is because their market share isn't near what Microsoft's is. The PC computers have had the majority of attacks because they hold 95% of the market share, but if you were to sway the market share towards the Mac OSX; the playing ground would then level out significantly. However, we have only seen a scratching of the surface as far as Apple vulnerabilities because nobody cares to find them."

So, while the PC continues to set the bar for security the Mac may attempt, but fails to even reach it.
